Where to Stay in Northumberland

EducationTourism › Where to Stay in Northumberland

Northumberland is the 6th largest county in the UK and it is one of the most diverse in terms of landscape. The county is spread across nearly 2,000 square miles which includes mountains, wetlands, grasslands, heath and many other landscape types. A recent study identified 44 different landscape types within the county.

Northumberland has a 100 mile- long coast, which has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). and also has a 640 square mile National Park. Choosing where to stay can be a challenge in such a large county, so just how do you narrow your options down?.

Choose Your Accommodation Type
An unusual approach is to decide what kind of accommodation you want to stay in and do a countywide search for that accommodation type. For example, search for 'Northumberland cottages' click through to a site that allows you to book them and key in your holiday dates. You can then click on the cottages that catch your eye or are within your budget and find out more about the area in which they are located. Most sites include lots of information about what there is to do close by. Taking this unusual approach can find you some real accommodation gems that you would have otherwise missed. When you take this approach you may also end up trying activities that you would not normally have thought of.

Choose an Activity

A more conventional approach is to choose an activity and find out which areas of Northumberland offer that particular activity. From there you can look for suitable accommodation close by.

Your choice of activity is huge in the county. As the home of Christianity in the UK, it has some sites that do not exist anywhere else in the UK. It was the home of the Romans for decades, and there are some great Roman forts and sites to see. The area has more castles than anywhere else in the UK does.
If you like to be active, there is plenty to do. The area has some fantastic walks, horse riding, coasteering, mountain biking and many other great activities available.
