The Honda CRV is a popular compact SUV. It has been available since 1995. This innovative SUV was developed from the very popular Honda Civic, and was one of the first SUVs to go to market across several continents. From the outset, it has proved to be a very popular vehicle in several countries despite being Honda's smallest SUV.

The Development of the Honda CRV

To date, there has been four generations of Honda CRVs. The first generation was made from 1995 to 2001, the second between 2001 and 2006 and the third from 2006 to 2011, there was also a facelift version in 2010. The latest version was released, in most markets, during 2012 and was well received in all of them.
Each continent gets a slightly different choice when it came to engines, transmission and, to some extent, trim. There is a 2.0 and a 2.4 litre engine to choose from and two transmission systems, the 5-speed automatic CVT (continuously variable transmission) box or a 6-speed manual box.

The vehicle has a reputation for safety and has a five star safety rating. This, and its spacious back seats, low sills and rear doors, that open a full ninety degrees, makes it especially popular with parents.

It is also one of the most economical vehicles, in its class, to run. The popular 2 litre manual version does 39.2 mpg and has relatively low emissions at 168g/km, which keeps the cost of road tax manageable.

Honda CRV Awards
Over the years, the Honda CRV has won several awards. Amongst the latest are awards for affordability, reliability and practicality. In 2012, it won AutoPacific’s Ideal Vehicle Award and, for two years running, was voted as the winner in the Best Retained Value Award for Non-Luxury Brands category by users. It also won their Best Retained Value in the SUV $25K–$35K category. In Europe, it is also known for holding its value. Surprisingly for a vehicle that is normally owned and run by families it also scooped the 4x4 of the Year award given out by Total 4x4 Magazine, whose readers are true offroaders.
