What To Do In A Dental Emergency

No matter how much care you take over the health of your teeth and gums, and how often you visit the dentist for a check-up, there may come a time when you are in need of emergency dental treatment. If you're lucky it will occur during a weekday and your dentist will be able to fit you in quickly or, alternatively, over the counter painkillers will enable you to manage the pain until you can make a dental appointment. Unfortunately, though, this isn't always the case. If it is out of hours or your dentist can't see you then you will need to make a dental emergency appointment.

Primarily, you should try treating the pain yourself. Try over the counter painkillers, talk to your pharmacist, and always check the leaflets and information to ensure that you don't take too much and to ensure that the painkillers are safe for you to take.

Contact your own dentist to try and make an appointment. You will be asked about the nature of your dental emergency. This will typically entail asking about the severity of the pain, whether you have tried painkillers, and more information to try and determine the nature of the problem. Once the dentist or their assistant has this information they will be able to advise you on the best course of action.
Be aware that, in a dental emergency, the role of the dentist is primarily to stop the pain and to ensure that your teeth and gums do not get any worse while you wait for an appointment. Usually you will not be given full treatment although you may be entitled to emergency fillings or emergency extractions in some instances. This will depend on the pain and its severity as well as the best course of action to be taken.

In a dental emergency you should first try to manage the pain with painkillers before contacting your own dentist or, failing this, making a dental emergency appointment. You may receive treatments including emergency fillings and extractions and the dentist will attempt to control the pain and ensure that the problem will not worse if left until you can make an appointment with your own dentist.
