These are some of the top things to do in London without spending a fortune; in fact the majority of them are free. The most expensive part is likely to be getting to London in the first place but if you buy train tickets in advance you can save a considerable amount of money than if you buy them on the day of travel, especially if you can buy them at least a month before your trip. You can save even more money with a travelcard London which gives you unlimited travel in zones one to six on over-ground, underground, Docklands Light Railway, Tramlink and bus.

No trip to London is complete without visiting a couple of its finest art galleries, so for some interesting contrasts why not visit the two Tate Galleries? In Tate Modern you will find some excellent contemporary art and in Tate Britain you will find paintings from the sixteenth century to the modern times.

London also has many excellent museums which have free entry. In the Natural History Museum in South Kensington you will find all that is strange and wonderful in nature along with some remarkable dinosaur skeletons. In the British Museum you will discover much about Great Britain’s glorious (and sometimes inglorious) past along with some excellent collections of Greek and Egyptian antiquities. In the Victoria and Albert museum there are cultural artefacts that cover over 3,000 years of civilisation and in the Science Museum you will find many excellent interactive displays.
London is famous for its many and beautiful parks and gardens and in most you can freely wander. Regents Park is a must see as is St James Park with its excellent views of Buckingham Palace. Naturally you will wish to visit Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens and see the remarkable Diana Memorial Fountain. They are some of the best botanical gardens in Europe and there are several amazing conservatories with species of exotic flora from all over the world; if you have a head for heights you can explore the breathtaking Rhizotron and Xstrata Treetop Walkway.

One of the favourite walk in London is along the South Bank of the River Thames. You can wander under all the old bridges and view many buildings and monuments. There are also numerous excellent eateries and pubs on the route.

Make sure that you are at the gates of Buckingham palace by 11.30 am so that you can see the Changing of the Guard; visit Trafalgar Square and Nelsons Column; explore the Tower of London; visit the Columbia Road flower market especially on a Sunday; there are just so many things to do in London.
