Atlanta Falcons Tickets: Franchise History

In 1966, the Atlanta Falcons became the first NFL franchise to be based in the southeast. As an expansion team, it took time for the Falcons to build a competitive team. Atlanta reached the postseason for the first time in 1978.
During the sixties and seventies, linebacker Tommy Nobis, defensive lineman Claude Humphrey, center Jeff Van Note and quarterback Steve Bartkowski were among the star players for the Falcons.

In 1980, Atlanta won its first division title with a 12-4 record. In the eighties and early nineties, running back Gerald Riggs and defensive back Deion Sanders were Atlanta's top performers.

After playing at Atlanta's Fulton-County Stadium from 1966-91, the Falcons moved into its current home, which is the Georgia Dome, in 1992.

Atlanta's Super Bowl Season
The 1998 season marked the highpoint for the franchise. Following an outstanding 14-2 regular season, the Falcons reached the NFC Championship Game. Against the 15-1 Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta won a dramatic 30-27 overtime decision to reach Super Bowl XXXIII.
While the Falcons came up short in a 34-19 setback against the Denver Broncos, Atlanta's first NFC title brought plenty of excitement to the city. Running back Jamal Anderson and quarterback Chris Chandler were two of the team's outstanding players in 1998.
