The History of the Isle of Lewis Chess Set

The original Isle of Lewis chess set was found in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis. In total there were 78 pieces found which were believed to have been carved in 12th century. They were made out of beautiful walrus ivory, which is one of the reasons they were preserved in such detail. They are one of the few examples of an intact mediaeval chess set.
The pieces are also known as Lewis chessmen or the Uig Chessmen. Uig is the Gaelic word for bay.

When and where they were made is still disputed. However, it is widely agreed that because they are made from walrus ivory that they were likely to have been made in Norway. Almost certainly in Trondheim, which was in the 12 century, home to skilled carvers. The fact that during the 12 century the Outer Hebrides were largely ruled by Norway adds weight to this theory. Similar carvings have been found in Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, and artefacts and weapons from the area bear a striking resemblance to the clothing and weapons depicted on the pieces.

However, the fact that the pieces included bishops has led some to claim they were in fact made in Iceland. But, that is not a particularly popular theory.

The beautiful design and the fact that these pieces represent one of the oldest complete chess sets found in Europe mean that today it is a very popular design. People love stepping back in time and playing with replica Lewis chessmen.
