If you are looking for an interesting job, with good job security, variety and a good rate of pay engineering is worth considering. It ticks all of the boxes.

The field of engineering is huge. There are jobs available in many different sectors. It is not all about heavy industries too, although there are plenty of jobs in these industries.

Types of Engineering Jobs
Fields include marine, logistics, renewable energies, IT, design, manufacturing, construction, oil, gas, mining, ports, telecommunications and many other fields. Engineers are also needed in other fields including science and medical. Ecologists, geologists and research scientists are usually trained engineers.

The fact that there is such a wide range of engineering jobs out there means that most people can find a role to suit them. Someone who is creative and enjoys IT could either work in design, CAD design or IT systems. Whilst someone who is more interested in architecture could work in construction. The skill set for each field varies, which means that there really is something for everyone when it comes to engineering.

Becoming an Engineer

The first step to becoming an engineer is to identify the field you are interested in working within. It is wise to choose a field that you have an interest in. Next you need to consider if that field suits your current skill set and interests. There is no point in training as a geologist if geography bores you to tears. If you do not have strong science skills becoming a research scientist is probably not going to work for you.
If you do not have the current skill set for a field that interests you, do not give up. Find out what you need to do to develop those skills and ask yourself if you have the time for and financial resources to study and learn those skills.

When you have made your choice, you need to begin the search for an engineering apprenticeship. It is important to follow an apprenticeship because most of the skills you will need cannot simply be learnt from a book. The more practical experience you have the easier it will be to find a permanent job when you qualify. An apprenticeship gives you that much needed experience.
